VET ANSWERS: Is my dog acting aggressive due to an eye injury?

We have a five-year-old cocker spaniel who is normally very active and friendly. Recently (over the past week), we have noticed that she does not want us to touch her head. She even tried to bite my husband when he tried to open her mouth.

We noticed that her left eyeball appears cloudy. Is it possible that she might be getting aggressive because the eye is hurting her?

A: The eye may indeed by painful and this could be why she is reluctant to have anyone touch her head or mouth. If the eye is cloudy, there is a possibility that the eye could be infected or that your dog may have glaucoma.

It is also possible that the cloudy eye may be unrelated to her aggressive behaviour. For example, she could have a toothache and resent the idea of anyone touching her mouth.

In any case, have your dog examined by your veterinarian or a veterinary ophthalmologist as soon as possible.
