Although the holidays might look a little different this year, your pet probably still has the same tendencies to get into trouble. Follow these tips to make sure your furry family members stay safe, healthy and merry this holiday season!

Holiday safety tips for your pet

  1. Pay close attention to treats. Chocolate, xylitol sweetener, grapes and raisins are particularly harmful to pets.
  2. Don’t leave decorations unattended. From chewing on electric cords to breaking glass ornaments, pets can get into trouble when you aren’t around to watch.
  3. Take the trash out right away. Leftover food or holiday wrapping is a recipe for disaster if your pet gets in the trash!
  4. Be cautious with candles and fireplaces. A swinging tail or a playful swat can have serious consequences.
  5. Avoid flowers and festive plants. Amaryllis, mistletoe, balsam, pine, cedar, holly, and poinsettias can be poisonous to your pet.
  6. Keep food out of your pet’s reach. Don’t let your pet get a hold of turkey bones, alcoholic drinks, sweets or high fat spicy foods.
  7. Don’t use tinsel or ribbon. Cats love tinsel, ribbon, and garlands but they can cause big problems if ingested.
  8. Avoid water additives for your Christmas tree. Use plain water instead of harmful chemicals in case your pet takes a sip.
  9. Pay attention to the door. With delivery people and guests coming and going, keep your pet away from the door so they don’t sneak out.
  10. Secure the tree and other décor. Try tying your tree to the ceiling or a door frame to avoid accidents!
