Free smartphone apps for pet owners

Chances are you use smartphone apps all day long. Whether it’s an app to help you schedule your life, or help navigate you somewhere, apps have been making our lives easier since the invention of the smartphone. Being a pet owner is fulfilling but it’s also a big responsibility. Luckily, there are a bunch of free smartphone apps designed to help you as a loving and caring pet owner.

Dog walking apps to help with tracking exercise

We all want to live a healthy life and many of us use step counters and fitness trackers to help. Did you know there are apps that help you track your dog’s fitness too? Tractive Dog Walk is a free exercise tracker for your dog walks that uses your phone’s GPS to record your dog walking route and display it on a map, complete with distance and time. You can also save photos on the app and log when your dog has a bathroom break.

Apps to connect you with pet services

If you don’t have an endless supply of dog or cat-loving friends and family members, finding reliable dog sitters can sometimes be a challenge. Let’s face it, sometimes we’re away on vacation or even have a long work day and we can’t always tend to our pet’s every need. This is where apps like Rover come in. Rover allows dog owners to get in touch with dog sitters for long-term stays or short visits. Rover does the hard work of vetting prospective dog sitters so you know your fur baby will be left in good hands. You can also pay directly through the app and your dog-sitter can even use the app to share photos and updates with you while you’re away.

Pet safety and health apps

In addition to many safety tools and resources available online, ASPCA also has an app called Animal Poison Control Centre. It allows you to search for a particular substance or plant like chocolate or a poinsettia, find out the toxicity risk, and gives a list of symptoms if you suspect your pet ingested something he or she shouldn’t have. It also gives suggested actions on what to do if your pet’s been exposed to a potentially toxic substance.

In addition to safety, there are also apps for tracking your dog’s health and needs. Petable is a health logging app created by veterinarians that allows you to set reminders for your pet’s vaccinations, dewormings, flea and tick treatments, vet appointments and anything else that can help them live a happy and healthy life. Similarly, 11pets helps you stay on top of your pet’s vaccinations, stores his or her medical history and scheduled vet visits. You can also track and monitor their weight, their teeth cleanings, grooming and more.

Pet insurance can help with the cost of vet visits

If you use a health tracking app for your pet that’s telling you it’s time for your dog to see the vet, some Petsecure plans can help with the cost of that visit. Learn what’s covered by Petsecure and get a free quote today.
