Pet Safety Tips for Summer!

Summer is most people's favourite season to be outside,
which means a lot of playtime with pets. Heat and sun can pose a
serious risk to pets, so keep the following in mind to enjoy
summer to the fullest!

  • KEEP COOL

Ensure there’s plenty of water and
    shady spots for your pets.

    Whether you’re in the backyard,
hiking or out camping, water should
    be available at all times.

Shade will provide relief from the
    heat and sun.

  • TIME YOUR WALKS

Exercise pets in the early morning or
late evening to avoid the hottest
    part of the day.
Hot surfaces can burn paw pads.

Check the heat by feeling the surface
with your hand or foot for 5 seconds.
If it’s too hot for you,
it’s too hot for them. Booties may be
    needed to protect their paws.

  • SECURE WINDOWS

    Secure window screens to
    prevent cats from escaping and
getting injured if falling from heights.

If possible, open the top pane of the
    window rather than the bottom
panes, and never leave windows open
    when animals are not supervised.

  • KNOW THE SIGNS OF
    HEAT STROKE

Heat stroke is a concern with pets,
    especially short-nosed dogs and cats
    like pugs, and Persians.

To identify heat stroke, watch for
    your pets becoming anxious,
panting with a bright red tongue,
    drooling, and unsteadiness,
which will result in the pet being
    unable to stand or respond.

  • NEVER LEAVE YOUR
    PETS IN A VEHICLE

Even with the windows down, the
temperature in a car rises very
fast, causing harm and even death
    to your pet.

Keep them at home where they’re
    cool and comfortable.
