SUMMER PET SAFETY TIPS

Summer is finally here! While the number of pet-friendly outdoor activities increase at this time of year, the warm weather also brings additional hazards. Here’s a list of tips to keep your pets safe and healthy while you’re enjoying fun in the sun this summer:

STAY COOL
Make sure your pets have plenty of water and that there are shady rest spots available. Water is essential at all times, whether you’re on a long hiking trip or even just playing in the backyard. Shade can provide much-needed relief from the heat and sun.

TIME YOUR WALKS
Hot surfaces can cause injuries to your pet’s paws, so if you’re an avid dog-walker, try to exercise pets in the early morning or late evening to avoid the hottest part of the day.

You can check the heat by feeling the surface with your hand or foot for a few seconds.

Remember, If it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for them! In cases where the sidewalk or road is too hot, even at cooler times of the day, booties may be required to protect your pet’s paws.

SECURE YOUR WINDOWS
Taking advantage of a nice summer breeze by opening your windows can be a great way to beat the heat, but cat owners should make sure their windows are secured to protect their pets from escaping or getting injured during a fall.

If possible, open the top pane of the window rather than the bottom panes, and never leave windows open when animals are unsupervised.

KNOW THE SIGNS OF HEAT STROKE
Heat stroke is a concern with for humans, but pets can suffer the ill effects as well, with short-nosed dogs and cats like pugs or Persians at an extra high risk.

To identify heat stroke, watch for your pets becoming anxious, panting with a bright red tongue, drooling, or unsteadiness, resulting in your pet being unable to stand or respond.

NEVER LEAVE YOUR PETS IN A VEHICLE
Even with the windows down, the temperature in a car rises extremely fast, which could cause serious harm and even death. If you’re going out, leave your pets at home where they can be cool and comfortable.
