Mattie suffers from Cystine Crystals - very rare in a kitten. He has been through so much in his little life, Most of Mattie’s life has been spent at the vet clinic, where they’ve had to catheterize him to remove these blockages - five times this has happened.
We never knew from one day to the next when Mattie was going to collapse in pain due to blockages. He has been on so much medication to help him through his very difficult time. His medical bills just kept piling up. As soon as we would get one paid off, there’d be a new bill waiting to get paid.
One morning, Mattie fell to the floor in severe pain. I immediately took him to his vet clinic where they were able to pass a catheter and flush his bladder. Mattie came home that day around 2:30pm, yet by 4:30pm he relapsed. This time at the clinic, they weren’t able to pass a catheter. His veterinarian told us his only hope was to go to P.E.I for surgery. Mattie was given strong pain medication to help him through the night, while arrangements were being made to fly him to Atlantic Veterinary College.

Mattie ended up having PU surgery and it saved his life! Today he continues his recuperation and he will be on renal food and potassium Citrate for the rest of his life. Our pets are a part of our family and so many people thought we were crazy taking out pet insurance. Truthfully, I never thought we would have to use it but it was reassuring just knowing that it was there. Many people thought we should have given up on Mattie and had him euthanized, but that never entered our minds. All we wanted was for our baby to get better and have a good life.

Our family is so thankful. I know his litter mate Molly is happy to have her brother back and so is our Himalayan - Caesar!
