Petsecure Plan FAQs
Q: What is covered in my pet insurance policy
No matter what level of coverage you have chosen, your plan covers veterinary fees due to accidents or illness (not applicable on the Petset Accident Only plan). This includes x-rays, hospitalization, surgery, prescriptions, chemotherapy, MRI/CAT scans, alternative treatments such as homeopathic therapy, and much more.
Q: What do I have to pay for?
You simply pay your monthly pet insurance premiums. Should your dog or cat need to visit the veterinarian, you pay the full amount of your bill at the office and then submit a completed claim form to us. Petsecure pet health insurance will reimburse you for up to 80% of the costs of care and veterinary services. You are responsible for paying the co-insurance and your annual deductible.
Q: Am I covered if my pet develops an ongoing condition?
Secure For Life™ means that your pet is covered as long as you stay enrolled on a Petsecure policy. Every level of Petsecure's Secure For Life™ coverage, from Secure 1 to Secure 4 provides renewable limits for all accidents and illness during the lifetime of your pet. Even on our introductory Petset coverage your coverage amounts renew each year.
Q: What is co-insurance?
Co-insurance (sometimes called 'co-pay') is the portion of the pet insurance claim that you are responsible for. With Petsecure pet health insurance, you pay 20%, and Petsecure covers up to 80% of your veterinary fees. We believe that co-insurance is a way of sharing in responsible pet ownership, and ensuring that premiums are kept affordable.
Q: What is a deductible?
The deductible is the fixed amount that you pay after your co-insurance. with Petsecure's Secure For Life™ plans, you only have to pay one deductible per year, no matter how many pet insurance claims you make in that year, and only if you need to make a claim. Secure For Life™ coverage allows you to choose your deductible to customize your pet insurance plan and the cost of your premiums. If you choose a higher deductible your monthly pet insurance premiums will be less, while choosing a lower deductible will increase your monthly premiums. The choice is up to you based on your budget and preference. On Petset Accident Only coverage you are responsible for $100 deductible per incident.
Q: How long will it take for my pet insurance claim to be paid?
Usually we are able to have your cheque processed and in the mail within 5 business days of receiving your claim. We strive to turn around claims as quickly and efficiently as possible.
Q: Can I insure my older pet?
Yes you can with Petsecure. We believe pet insurance should be available to all pet owners. With Petsecure, there is no age limit to insuring your pet, allowing even senior pets to receive coverage. Specific medical records are required for dogs over 8 years of age and cats over 10 years of age.
Q: Can I continue to use my existing veterinarian?
With Petsecure pet health insurance, you can use any licensed veterinarian in Canada and can visit and claim at multiple veterinary clinics - the choice of who should care for your important pet is completely yours.
Q: Will my deductible or premiums go up if I make too many claims?
Neither your deductible, nor your premiums will increase in response to how many pet insurance claims you make. Your deductible increases only as your pet ages and becomes more susceptible to illness or injury. Occasionally we must temporarily adjust the co-insurance amount for a small percentage of claimants, in order to help keep pet health insurance affordable for all our members.
Just as with any other insurance, premiums may increase over time due to inflation or other outside forces.
Q: Does Petsecure cover dental cleanings or problems with my pet's teeth and/or gums?
Yes! We are proud to offer this unique benefit on our Secure For Life™ coverage levels. We offer an annual coverage amount towards dental care based on the plan your pet is on. For pets under 5, there is a 14 day waiting period and for pets over 5, there is a one year waiting period for dental coverage.
Q: Do you cover alternative therapies?
Yes! On our Secure For Life™ coverage, we cover up to $350 per year for: massage, hydrotherapy, acupuncture, chiropractic and homeopathy treatments. No matter what level of Secure For Life™ pet insurance coverage you choose, from Secure 1 to Secure 4, you are covered for up to $350 per year for behavioural therapy, alternative therapy and medical devices.
Q: Are there any delays (waiting periods) between the time I enroll with Petsecure Pet Health Insurance and the time my pet's coverage begins?
Under all levels, the accident waiting period is only 48 hours and the illness waiting period is 14 days. For pets under 5, there is a 14 day waiting period for dental coverage. For pets over 5, the waiting period for dental coverage is one year. Our preventive care coverage under Secure 4 has no waiting periods.
Q: I have more than one pet. Do you offer a volume discount?
Yes. If you enroll three or more pets with Petsecure pet insurance, we will reduce your premium by 10%. You'll save 15% by enrolling six or more pets.
Q: When are my payments for my policy due?
When you first enroll, we will debit your premiums for the remainder of the month and the upcoming month. Going forward, your payments will be debited on (or around) the first of the month. Please note that if at any time we attempt to withdraw your premium payment and the funds are not available, we will retry a few days later.

Bailey's True Tail -
a pet insurance testimonial
"Petsecure pet insurance gave us the peace of mind to be able to provide our pet with the best possible treatment..."
Read Bailey's Story...
Bailey
Peggy Philion, Ottawa, ON
Our Maine Coon cat, Bailey, has always been a big cat. His weight had become such a problem that he started to have trouble jumping onto the counter.
One day, we noticed that our 13-year-old Bailey had lost a considerable amount of weight. Our first thought was that the diet food was working incredibly well, but then we realized that Bailey was actually eating more because he was constantly hungry. After a series of blood tests at the veterinary clinic, Bailey was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism.
We were advised that the safest and most effective treatment available was radioiodine therapy. This would involve a single injection of radioactive iodine under Bailey's skin. The radioactive iodine destroys the abnormal thyroid tissue that causes the illness.
There is little to no discomfort, and the success rate is about 90-98%. This therapy is also a better alternative to daily medication or surgery for hyperthyroid felines. The down side was that it runs a bill of about $1,100. Having pet insurance from Petsecure gave us the peace of mind to be able to provide our pet with the best possible treatment available.
Because of this treatment and pet health insurance, Bailey is now healthier than ever! We are so thankful that he doesn't require daily medication for the rest of his life. Thank you, Petsecure pet insurance!
